Fantasy News for NFL Week 2

Just one week into the 2023 NFL season, fantasy owners are already scrambling for replacement players due to several key injuries affecting a few of the biggest names in the game.

Finding adequate replacements for an every-week fantasy starter will be difficult, but owners can rely on our best six-wire pick-ups to snatch up valuable successors.

So which stars are out this week or all season? Which starters may be unavailable this Sunday? Read on to discuss the latest fantasy news for NFL Week 2.

New York Jets QB Aaron Rodgers Done For Season

Four plays into his New York debut, Aaron Rodgers suffered a season-ending tear in his Achilles tendon. Recovery from this injury typically takes 8-10 weeks and up to six months of physical therapy.

Fantasy Impact:

Jets HC Robert Saleh committed to last season’s starter (and former top first-round draft pick) Zach Wilson for the remainder of the season. While he’s the only other QB currently on the Jets roster, expect a team primed for playoff contention like New York to look for a suitable backup who can potentially replace Wilson atop the depth chart.

Baltimore Ravens RB J.K. Dobbins Done For Season

Feature RB J.K. Dobbins suffered a tear in his Achilles tendon on Sunday, ending his season after a promising start to the 2023 campaign. Prior to the injury, Dobbins recorded a rushing TD and 37 yards from scrimmage off eight carries and two receptions.

Fantasy Impact:

The Ravens have veteran Gus Edwards and Justice Hill to carry the workload this season. Baltimore split playing time evenly after Dobbins’ injury. Edwards is a downhill runner while Hill is a shifty back who can create his own space. Expect Hill to garner a lion’s share of the fantasy value moving forward.

Kansas City Chiefs TE Travis Kelce Limited In Practice

After suffering a bone bruise last Tuesday in practice, Travis Kelce was scratched from the team’s Week 1 matchup against the Detroit Lions. While participating in practice this week, Kelce is restricted to limited activity.

Fantasy Impact:

Prior to Thursday’s miss, Kelce had only missed one game in nine seasons for Kansas City. Expect the Chiefs’ veteran receiver to play this Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars as the worst fears arising from the hyperextension or aggravating the injury have been resolved.

Philadelphia Eagles RB Kenneth Gainwell ‘Likely Out’ Against Vikings

After suffering a ribs injury in the season-opening win over the New England Patriots, Kenneth Gainwell is “likely out” during the quick turnaround week for Thursday’s contest against the Minnesota Vikings, the NFL Network reported Wednesday.

Fantasy Impact:

Gainwell did not practice on Tuesday. The Eagles relied on the third-year player to replace Miles Sanders’ production, and Gainwell notched 74 yards on 18 touches. Expect D’Andre Swift and Boston Scott to have split duties Thursday night, especially if Rashaad Penny (inactive for Week 1) cannot participate against the Vikings.

Los Angeles Chargers RB Austin Ekeler Availability Undetermined

Despite suffering an ankle injury in Week 1’s loss to the Miami Dolphins, Austin Ekeler exploded for 164 yards from scrimmage and one TD, ranking third among all RBs to start the 2023 fantasy season. News yesterday that Ekeler’s long-time agent Cameron Weiss passed away from cancer led to Wednesday’s scratch from the Chargers’ practice.

Fantasy Impact:

Should Los Angeles scratch Ekeler from Sunday’s tilt against the Tennessee Titans, expect Joshua Kelley to emerge as a clear-cut top fantasy player in Week 2. While splitting duties with Ekeler against the Dolphins, Kelley netted 91 yards and a TD. Ekeler’s fantasy owners should have their answers regarding his status answered by Friday, according to the NFL Network.
