NFL DFS Week 1 Lineup Strategy

Published by Chris Lollis on September 6, 2023

Fantasy football season gets underway this Thursday and there’s no better way to start your own season off than making a few DraftKings Week 1 lineups.

Banking on the Jaguars offense to score a handful of touchdowns and Tony Pollard to become your “hero RB” against the Giants, stay tuned for weekly DFS lineup articles throughout the season.

QB Trevor Lawrence

Jaguars   |   Salary: $6,500

The Jags face the Colts in their first game since a 7-point loss to the Chiefs in the Divisional Round in the AFC playoffs. Fast forward a handful of months, and the Jaguars had an incredible offseason featuring the re-signing of Evan Engram, strengthening the offensive line through the draft, and selected an RB for short yardage situations with Tank Bigsby on Day 2.

As for T-LAW in Week 1, expect the superstar to spread the ball around to all five of his premier playmakers including taking some deep shots against a vulnerable Colts secondary.

With one season under Pederson under his belt, the sky's the limit for Trevor, especially in Week 1 against a vulnerable opponent in Indianapolis.

RB Tony Pollard

Cowboys   |   Salary: $7,500

The priciest player on our DFS roster this week, it is imperative that we take the “hero-RB” strategy in Week 1. Whether CMC, Pollard, Ekeler, or Nick Chubb is your cup of tea, one of these five RBs has to make your roster, regardless of the price tag.

Pollard comes into 2023 as one of the favorites to finish as the RB1 in fantasy among experts and has full control of the Cowboys RB room for the first time in his career after the Zeke departure. Pollard averaged 18.9 PPG in PPR formats last season when obtaining 13 or more total touches.

That would’ve placed him 1st among all RBs by a full TWO points in 2022. With Elliott gone and the Cowboys due to use Tony in both the pass and run game all day, the 26-year-old RB needs to have a place in your squad.

RB David Montgomery

Lions (TNF)   |   Salary: $5,700

Our sole Thursday Night Football participant within our lineup, David Montgomery is the perfect low ceiling-high floor compliment to our hero RB in Tony Pollard. Montgomery is due to receive at least 12 carries in Thursday’s matchup against the defending champions and when he went for over 12 carries with Chicago in 2022, he returned RB1 numbers.

With an added value as Detroit’s goal line carrier, Montgomery should return a 10+ fantasy point game against a Kansas City defense that could be lacking their star power up front on the defensive line.

With fellow RB mate Jahmyrr Gibbs due to get some slot work in this game due to the lack of outside playmakers for the Lions, Monty is a perfect RB2 play for this Week.

WR Jaylen Waddle

Dolphins   |   Salary: $7,100

Our WR1, Jaylen Waddle, not only has a chance to surpass Tyreek Hill in targets, receptions, and TDs this season but could pace the AFC WRs in a handful of these categories.

The third-year WR absolutely dominated in Miami’s wins last season, so I’d believe Mike McDaniel took that into account when game-planning for the Chargers this Sunday.

Coming just 30th out of all WRs in deep targets last season, expect McDaniel and Tua to dial up some deep shots starting in Week 1 to the speedster. Coming 1st in YPT and YPC, it’s inevitable we see a few 25+ point performances from Waddle in shootout games for Miami.

WR Tyler Lockett

Seahawks   |   Salary: $6,700

The Seahawks are due for a fantastic 2023 season after boosting their depth at playmaking positions on both the offense and defense. More notably, first round selection Jaxon Smith-Njigba will become one of the best wideouts from this draft class.

However, with his Week 1 status up in the air, Tyler Lockett becomes a great value play against the struggling Rams defense.

Finishing 4th among WRs in total TDs and 5th in target separation in 2022, trust in Geno Smith to find Lockett down the field for some big gains in their first home matchup of the season.

WR Christian Kirk

Jaguars   |   Salary: $5,600

Stacking onto the Lawrence pickup, Kirk is essential DFS play against the sub-par Colts secondary. The 26-year-old wideout should see even more slot snaps this season and with an incredible amount of chemistry already developed with Trevor Lawrence, C Kirk’s yardage and TD totals shouldn’t drop anytime soon.

While Ridley should be eased into his first game back in nearly two calendar years, expect Kirk, Engram, and Zay Jones to dominate for the Jaguars in Week 1.

TE Evan Engram

Jaguars   |   Salary: $4,700

Our third Jaguar in the lineup this week, Evan Engram is a great high floor play at Tight End. With Travis Kelce most likely missing Week 1, grab Engram’s value before it begins to rise.

Other TEs in this salary range include Kmet, Schultz, Higbee, and Pitts. I’d rather trust in a great offense that is due to put up 25+ points on Sunday.

FLX Puka Nacua

Rams   |   Salary: $3,000

Nacua has generated a ton of buzz this offseason including a few great days at training camp which I was in attendance for.

With Cooper Kupp unavailable Week 1 and Nacua winning out the WR3 battle, the short yardage and red zone situations could be headed Nacua’s way against a Seattle defense that is due to let in a few scores.

Sean McVay has already given the media a heads-up, stating Puka will be an “immediate contributor”. With Van Jefferson and Tutu Atwell competing for targets, Nacua becomes a cheap flex play who can easily garner 10+ points in a game where the Rams should be down.

D/ST Falcons

Salary: $3,200

The Falcons open their season against division rival Carolina. If we learned anything about the Panthers over this offseason, it’s that the offensive line is a bottom-five unit in the league.

Although I wouldn’t play the Falcons defense in any other week, look for Arthur Smith’s squad to force a few turnovers and hold Bryce Young’s Panthers to less than 13 points in his debut.
