Daily fantasy sports have been the rage over the past 10 years -- ever since the creation of FanDuel and DraftKings, two of the most dominant DFS services ever created. They give players an opportunity to bet on their favorite teams and players, but with a unique twist.
DFS has especially grown popular in states where traditional sports betting isn’t legalized or regulated, as well as states that don’t have laws disallowing the use of daily fantasy sports. Since it’s their only real option when betting on sports, DFS prospers in these types of states.
With the growing popularity of daily fantasy sports -- not only across the United States but all around the world -- there’s also a growing amount of competition within the industry. More and more DFS operators are creating unique online experiences for players to enjoy and appreciate.
In our opinion, there are five daily fantasy sports operators that take this experience to a completely new level and set the bar for new operators entering the DFS space. Those five operators include:
Since DFS is only becoming more and more popular, especially as states continue legalizing and regulating it, there are sure to be plenty of other operators entering the industry in the coming years. As of right now, however, the five operators listed above are the best of the best.
Now that you have a brief overview of which daily fantasy sports apps reign superior in the DFS industry today, you’re likely wondering which one is right for you. With so many to choose from, even outside of our top-five list, there truly is a DFS app designed for everyone and anyone.
If you’re new to the hobby and want to avoid having to try each and every one of those apps to find the one that’s best suited to you, don’t panic. We’re about to give you an in-depth look at each one -- including DraftKings, PrizePicks, Underdog Fantasy, FanDuel, and SuperDraft.
Let’s get started!
DraftKings is one of the two OGs in the daily fantasy sports industry -- alongside FanDuel, which we’ll talk about a little later on. The DraftKings platform launched in 2012 and helped revolutionize the industry, which eventually led to the industry booming between 2014 and 2015.
Not long after launching, DraftKings struck a partnership with Major League Baseball. Since then, they’ve partnered with leagues and teams across the country. In fact, they even started trading on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange in April 2020 -- utilizing the DKNG ticker symbol.
With generous bonuses given to new users and a wide range of lucrative contests across all major sports, DraftKings is heavily favored among both veteran and rookie DFS players.
PrizePicks is one of the newer daily fantasy sports platforms in the industry today, but it’s quickly growing to be a favorite among players. Available in over half of all states across the country, it gives players a unique experience that no other operator or platform can match.
It’s extremely fun and simple to use. You simply choose the sport, the player, the stat (or fantasy points), select the over or under, and hope that you get it right. There are two types of bets that you can place (Flex or Power) and you can choose up to five different players per bet.
Your winnings are determined by the number of players you get correct and the type of bet that you place. The Flex option is a low-risk, low-reward. The Power option is high-risk, high-reward.
If you thought PrizePicks was new to the scene, Underdog Fantasy didn’t launch until July 17, 2020. Despite being one of the newest platforms in the industry, it has garnered more interest than most -- both from players and investors. Today, it’s one of our personal DFS favorites.
Some of the prominent investors that have gotten behind Underdog include Mark Cuban, Kevin Durant, Adam Schefter, Jared Goff, Matthew Dellevadova, The Chainsmokers, Kygo, Steve Aoki, Nas, Gunna, Future, Sway House, DJ Skee, Wilson Chandler, and more than 60 others.
They offer everything a DFS player could want -- daily fantasy, weekly fantasy, season-long fantasy, and even pick ‘em contests. They also offer new players a generous welcome bonus.
As we mentioned above, FanDuel -- along with DraftKings -- is the OG when it comes to daily fantasy sports. In fact, FanDuel is the OG-OG, having launched several years before the DraftKings platform in 2009. If it weren’t for FanDuel, who knows where the industry would be.
They have over 12 million registered users and more than 1,500 employees, they’re one of the largest DFS platforms in today’s market. It’s no surprise when you factor in how well they treat the players, ensuring everyone has a high-quality experience when enjoying the DFS platform.
With both a welcome bonus and refer-a-friend bonus, new players are given the VIP treatment from the start. Not only do they offer DFS, but they have an online sportsbook in select states.
SuperDraft is another new daily fantasy sports option for players to consider when searching for their preferred platform. It does away with the traditional salary cap and salary tag for each player. Instead, it assigns a multiplier to each player, which makes things much more difficult.
For example, let’s say Josh Allen is given a 1x multiplier and Jared Goff is given a 1.75x multiplier. If Josh Allen scores 22 fantasy points, he would end with a total of 22 points. If Jared Goff ends with just 15 fantasy points, he would end with a total of 26.25 points after the multiplier.
The way SuperDraft is set up, players have to put a lot more thought into their picks. While it makes it difficult, it makes it more interesting at the same time -- which is what people want.
